Viola reveals that she is not Cesario, but is a woman and the twin sister of Sebastian.After being confronted by Orsino and Olivia for denying his marriage with Olivia, Sebastian makes his appearance in the scene and the characters are shocked to see him and Cesario together (Shakespeare 223, 227).Arrested, Antonio pleads Cesario to help him after he tries to save Cesario from Sir Toby and Sir Andrew’s wrath however, Cesario claims that she never met him making Antonio feel shocked and betrayed (Shakespeare 179, 181, 187,189,191, 207). Olivia also mistaken Sebastian as Cesario and asks him to marry her which he accepts. The jealous Sir Andrew challenges Cesario to a duel to win Olivia’s affection however he and Sir Toby mistaken Cesario to Sebastian and get into a brawl with him. External Conflict: Sebastian arrives to Illyria with his companion Antonio, a wanted sailor who saved him at sea.She believes her change in gender is what caused all of these complications (Shakespeare 29, 59,67). Also, this confusion makes Viola feel hopeless for attaining love, and it makes her feel bad for misleading Olivia. Orsino and Olivia are unaware that Viola is a girl and this makes it complicated for her to confess her love to Orsino. To make matters more complicated, Olivia begins to fall in love with Viola (dresses as Cesario) after she tries to send Orsino’s love messages to her. Internal Conflict: Viola begins to fall in love with Orsino who is in love with Olivia.Also, it shows that she does not hesitate to become independent (Shakespeare 11). This reveals that Viola believes that she has to be a male in order to survive without her brother. Internal Conflict: With the help of the sea captain, she dresses up as a boy naming herself Cesario and works for Duke Orsino.This conflict fits the plot because it introduces Viola’s bond with her brother, and it reveals how she is not optimistic that he might have survived (Shakespeare 7). She feels lost and lonely because her brother was her only family. Internal Conflict: She mourns the loss of her twin brother, Sebastian, because she believes that he drowned during the accident.
